Brie Larson and Tessa Thompson support Captain Marvel and Valkyrie becoming the MCU's first same-sex couple

Captain Marvel and Valkyrie actors Brie Larson and Tessa Thompson support a potential romantic relationship between their MCU characters. Both fairly newcomers to the MCU, the pair debuted their respective heroes towards the end of Phase 3 - Larson in her titular film Captain Marvel earlier this year, and Thompson in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnaraok in 2017. Despite boarding the franchise late, they've both made their presence felt right away.

Larson and Thompson are among the growing number of female key players in the MCU. After years of only having Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow as its prominent heroine, there's been an influx of women of power in the franchise over the last few years, with the addition of Zoe Saldana's Gamora, Karen Gillan's Nebula, Evangeline Lily's The Wasp, Pom Klementieff's Mantis, Danai Gurira's Okoye, Letitia Wright's Shuri, Lupita Nyong'o's Nakia, and Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch. Avengers: Endgame even debuted Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts as Rescue. But aside from Marvel Studios working on better representing strong females, the MCU is also working to be more LGBTQ-inclusive, and Thompson and Larson are willing to be its first same-sex couple.

Captain Marvel Valkyrie

The actors appeared at ACE Comic-Con in Chicago (via Comic Book), and revealed that they're both supportive of the idea that their characters begin a romantic relationship; "We're here to ship, y'all! We can dig into it, I'm just telling you we're shipping," Larson said, while Thompson followed by saying: "Brie is my real-life queen, in general. If it becomes canon, that's cool, too." This sentiment was welcomed by those who were in attendance at the panel.

Since it was implied that Valkyrie is the first openly bisexual hero in the MCU, fans have been on the lookout for when this will be explicitly played out on the big screen. And since Endgame ended with her officially becoming the ruler of the new Asgard, the hunt for her new queen has begun, with the public giving their own suggestions on who it might be. Some think that the return of Natalie Portman's Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder can pave the way for a romance, others, meanwhile feel like Jamie Alexander's Lady Sif (including the actress herself) is a better option. However, between Larson and Thompson's real-life friendship and this declaration, it's safe to say that seeing Captain Marvel as Valkyrie's lover is one that's gaining some traction with viewers.

It's too early to tell if something will ever come out of people loving the idea of Captain Marvel and Valkyrie being romantically involved, considering that both are pivotal players in their separate film series. Marvel Studios will have to craft a narrative that can actually show them becoming a couple, otherwise, it'll only feel like pandering. Nevertheless, fans can expect the MCU to properly debut an openly gay character, and rumor has it that it'll be in Chloe Zhao's Eternals.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn stood up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after it faced criticism from veteran directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

Gunn defended the franchise in an Instagram post featuring two of the most beloved characters from his own films: Groot and Rocket Raccoon.

"Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them "despicable,'" Gun captioned the photo in a nod to the work of Coppola and Scorsese, which includes "The Godfather" trilogy and "Goodfellas" respectively.

He added that the MCU was just cinema's latest evolution: "Superheroes are simply today's gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers.

"Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay."

Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them “despicable”. Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns, and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same. I remember a great uncle to whom I was raving about Star Wars. He responded by saying, “I saw that when it was called 2001, and, boy, was it boring!” Superheroes are simply today’s gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. A post shared by James Gunn (@jamesgunn) on Oct 20, 2019 at 11:51am PDT on

Gunn's comments were made after Scorsese said that Marvel films weren't cinema in an interview with Empire magazine (via ScreenRant). He instead compared the superhero movies to theme parks.

Speaking to journalists in Lyon after being awarded the Prix Lumiere for his contribution to cinema, Coppola threw his weight behind Scorsese's remarks, and went a step further.

"I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again," he said, according to AFP.

"Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is," he added.

Gunn wasn't the only one to defend comic book adaptations in light of their reprovals.

"Of course it's cinema! It's at the movies,""Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi told AP Entertainment.

Samuel L. Jackson was among the actors who have defended the movies, telling Variety: "I mean that's like saying Bugs Bunny ain't funny. Films are films. Everybody doesn't like [Scorsese's] stuff either.

"Everybody's got an opinion, so I mean it's okay.

"Ain't going to stop nobody from making movies."

With Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame"earning $2.79 billion globally, Jackson is probably right.

Hugh Jackman wolverine roar to fan

  • Hugh Jackman roared for a fan in typical Wolverine style during his "The Man. The Music. The Show." concert in Kansas City last week.
  • In footage shared on Twitter, the "X-Men" star is seen high fiving a crazed fan before screaming into their phone camera.

Hugh Jackman showed off his iconic Wolverine roar for a fan attending his "The Man. The Music. The Show." concert in Kansas City last week.

In the footage shared by Marsha Emmot on Twitter, Jackman repeatedly high fives a crazed fan before spreading his arms and breaking into his iconic Wolverine roar. The drumsticks in his hands even look like his trademark claws as the "X-Men" superhero.

"My video of your interaction with huge Wolverine fan in Kansas City! The show was incredible! Glad I was there to push you back up, thought you were coming down off the stage," Emmot tweeted alongside the video.

"You have waited one and a half hours for that moment," Jackman can be heard telling the man in the video.

Jackman's 90-stop concert tour is a one-man show that sees the actor singing songs from his career, including "The Greatest Showman,""Les Miserables," and other Broadway hits, accompanied by a live orchestra.

Jackman is just an Academy Award away from becoming an EGOT — someone who has won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards. Only 15 people have won all four before.

"Doing an arena show, for me, is perhaps the ultimate because of the amount of energy and excitement that you can create," Jackson told NME before the tour.

"Nothing can replace the live aspect where something can happen that night."

The tour finished on Sunday, October 20, in Mexico City.

Meet the startup creating audio-text hybrid series that has partnered with Marvel, 'Orphan Black,' and other big media franchises

Molly Barton Serial Box

  • Serial Box, a digital-content startup that makes e-book and audio hybrids, produces original stories using a unique method designed for those who want to switch between the mediums, like commuters.
  • The platform's 31 series are targeted mostly toward fantasy and sci-fi fans, but with partnerships with Marvel and Warner Bros. recently announced, and Serial Box nearly doubling its content by the end of the year, more options are coming.
  • Serial Box cofounder and CEO Molly Barton spoke with Business Insider about the company's content-creation strategy, user engagement, and upcoming serials.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's rare that a commuter gets on the subway without headphones, or doesn't flip on the radio when hopping in the car, and audio books have become a great listening option. But once the commute is over, many people would likely rather get their reading done in text form.

The startup Serial Box is trying to build a business solving the disconnect between those two mediums.

The content platform offers original series and official continuations of well-known stories that bundle short audio books and e-books, allowing users to switch back and forth between listening and reading without losing their place.

If you're walking to the subway, you might opt for the audio option. But if you're lucky enough to find a seat during your commute, you could pull up the e-book and pick up right where the audio left off.

"Having both the auditory and visual experience makes it more immersive in a very busy world and increases comprehension," Molly Barton, the CEO and cofounder of Serial Box, said. "It's really flexible and geared toward moments when you're in transition."

The company raised its first capital in 2017, then spent the next few years developing serials in order to have a lineup of content ready to go, Barton said.

The company's original goal was to tap into existing sci-fi and fantasy fandoms, and one of its first hits, "Orphan Black: The Next Chapter," was a continuation of the BBC America thriller series "Orphan Black." The serial was narrated by the show's star, Tatiana Maslany, who maintained a strong fan base after the final season in 2017.

While the sci-fi and fantasy group is still an important demographic, a larger content library will draw different types of readers and listeners, Barton said. Users can choose from 31 titles, but Barton said that by the end of the year, that number will be up to at least 50.

In March, Serial Box secured a partnership with Marvel to release stories like "Thor: Metal Gods," which is available for preorder now and launches on December 12. It also has a series based on "Black Panther" in the works, Barton said.

Serial Box also partners with Warner Bros. for content like "The Flash," which is based on The CW show of the same name, and three more series that will be announced later in the fall, Barton said.

Serial Box tracks social conversation to inform storylines

Besides tapping into established fandoms, Serial Box keeps up with the desires of fans by tracking conversation on social media, according to Barton.

Since installments are released in increments and not all at once, Serial Box writers have even taken social-media sentiment into account as they work.

"We're able to observe reader and listener reaction to storylines and characters, so in some cases, we have actually altered the stories based on fan reactions," Barton said.

Serial Box wants to take that strategy one step further by facilitating fan conversation and monitoring it, Barton said. The company is in the process of running experiments with small groups of fans to see what works best.

"China and other Asian markets are way ahead of us in terms of having community threaded into the content experience," Barton said. "We're looking at their platforms closely and thinking about how we can interpret them for Western markets."

'We're delivering stories the way TV does'

Serial Box also hopes to build new fandoms around its original series.

Both "The Vela," a story about a refugee crisis in space, and "Ninth Step Station," a cyberpunk police procedural that takes place in Tokyo, generated enough buzz among fans that second seasons were green-lighted for each, Barton said.

And Serial Box originals feel different from a typical audio book or e-book because they're created more like TV shows, Barton said.

Over 100 writers create content for Serial Box, and they do it in a writers room setting in teams of about three to five, as opposed to flying solo, Barton said. The result is a series of short installments that contribute to a larger story.

"Essentially, we're delivering stories the way that TV does but doing that through an audio and written form," Barton said.

Apple and Disney are about to shake up the streaming wars in a monumental way (AAPL, DIS)

  • Apple and Disney are about to launch their highly anticipated streaming services.
  • Apple TV Plus launches on Friday and costs $5 a month. Disney Plus launches on November 12 and costs $7 a month.
  • A standard subscription to Netflix, meanwhile, costs $13 a month — more than the price of Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus combined.
  • The presence of Apple and Disney is going to raise the bar for what people expect from a subscription streaming service.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The streaming landscape is going to change drastically in the next couple of weeks.

Right now, the big names in streaming are Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO. It's been this way for years now.

But on Friday, Apple will join the fray.

And in about two weeks, Disney, the 800-pound gorilla, will enter the picture.

The competition is about to heat up. Apple and Disney are about to raise the bar for what people expect out of streaming services in terms of quantity, quality, and price.

SEE ALSO: Apple used helicopters and drones to film stunning 4K screensavers for the Apple TV — here's how to get them on your computer

On Friday, Apple will release Apple TV Plus, where Apple's original programming will live. It costs $5 a month, but you get one free year of service if you buy an Apple product, such as an iPhone or Mac computer.

Early reviews for Apple TV Plus are mixed, with some critics calling series like "The Morning Show" and "See" underwhelming, at least at launch. But Apple has a ton of star power — and promise — attached to this thing.

Just look at all of the names who have committed to building series for Apple TV Plus: Steven Spielberg, Steve Carell, Chris Evans, the NBA star Kevin Durant, Kristen Bell, Rashida Jones, and Oprah Winfrey (to name a few).

Questions about quality aside, these are A-listers you don't usually see attached to streaming services. Netflix and HBO get some pretty big names too, including some of the names above, but Apple and Disney are going to attract a lot of big-name Hollywood talents. That will put more pressure on Netflix and HBO to continually do the same.

In about two weeks, Disney will launch Disney Plus, which costs $7 a month. (Disney has also been offering promotions throughout the year so it can be even cheaper than that.)

Disney Plus, like Apple TV Plus, will host a ton of original programming, but it also benefits from Disney's massive vault. On top of Disney's own movies and shows, Disney also owns Pixar, Marvel, "Star Wars," National Geographic, and Fox (including "The Simpsons"), so expect an onslaught of options.

Even if you buy subscriptions to both Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus, that's still cheaper than a single standard subscription to Netflix.

Netflix has three plans:

  • "Basic" limits you to one screen and is standard-definition only. It costs $9 a month.
  • "Standard" gives you high-definition video and lets you watch two screens at once. That costs $13 a month.
  • "Premium" offers 4K support (on content where it's available), and you can watch on four screens at once. It costs $16 a month.

Similarly, HBO Now costs $15 a month.

A lot of people watch HBO and Netflix, since they have a ton of programming that people like to talk about, but the presence of Apple and Disney might make some people rethink their subscriptions.

All these streaming services start to add up. Hulu can cost anywhere from $6 a month to $12 a month. Amazon Prime Video can cost $9 a month, though it's included if you're an Amazon Prime member.

If you want all the above services, plus the new ones from Apple and Disney, it's going to cost you: If you buy into all the above services — Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, a standard Netflix subscription, HBO Now, and Hulu — you're going to pay around $46 a month.

It will be interesting to see how people receive Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus. But given how the companies behind these services have a ton of power, money, and influence in the tech and entertainment spheres, I'm expecting a big shift in the landscape. The pressure will be on incumbents like Netflix and HBO to prove the value of their offerings.

HBO is in pretty good shape, even after the global bow of "Game of Thrones." It has a ton of hit shows, big-name actors, and interesting series, like "Watchmen,""Euphoria," and "Silicon Valley." It has always been a premium service, so don't expect much to change there. HBO will also have a new service, HBO Max, coming in 2020, and the company is pouring a ton of resources into it.

Netflix, on the other hand, is perhaps the most popular streaming service — for shows like "Stranger Things," movies like "To All The Boys I've Loved Before," and excellent docuseries like the new "Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner" series from David Chang — but it also has a ton of programming I'll just never watch. Netflix could definitely be pickier about which shows and movies it chooses to produce.

As Apple and Disney release their streaming services, it will be interesting to see how these mainstays respond. There will be more pressure to create shows that are not just good but phenomenal— both popular and critically acclaimed. Hopefully, these services (particularly Netflix and HBO) choose to also reexamine their own monthly prices.

But two things are certain: More competition in this space is a very good thing, and there has never been a better time to be a cord cutter.

  • The original "Ant-Man" director, Peyton Reed, is reportedly returning to direct a third movie in the franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
  • THR reports the movie will likely be released in July 2022.
  • The previous two films were released in July. If you consult Marvel Studios' release date calendar there's an open slot for July 9, 2022.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more.

A third "Ant-Man" movie is reportedly underway with franchise director Peyton Reed set to return, according to The Hollywood Reporter

According to THR, Paul Rudd is expected to return as Scott Lang/Ant-Man.

The last time we saw Rudd was in April's "Avengers: Endgame" where he was grappling with the fact that his daughter, Cassie, was now five years older.

THR reports the third film will likely be released in 2022. That checks out if you look at the current Marvel Studios calendar.

In May, Disney announced eight untitled Marvel movies through 2o22. It confirmed five movies in July at San Diego Comic-Con and the release date of a "Black Panther 2" film at Disney's D23 Expo in August

Here's the current Marvel release schedule:

May 1, 2020: "Black Widow"
November 6, 2020: "The Eternals"
February 12, 2021: "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings"
May 7, 2021: "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness"
July 16, 2021: "Spider-Man 3" (Disney/Sony)
November 5, 2021: "Thor: Love and Thunder"
February 18, 2022:
May 6, 2022: "Black Panther 2"
July 9, 2022:
Unknown dates: "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3" and "Blade"

Based on the current Marvel schedule we have, it's likely that the untitled "Ant-Man 3" could be released on that July 9, 2022 date. That fits. The previous two "Ant-Man" movies were both released in early July.

Combined, both films have grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide in the summer month.

A representative for Disney did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

Director Roland Emmerich behind the scenes on the set of MIDWAY

  • At the junket for his new war movie "Midway," director Roland Emmerich — the man behind "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow"— told Insider that Marvel movies send him to sleep.
  • "When I see Marvel movies, my eyes glaze over," he said in the interview in London, adding: "I watch them on the plane so I can fall asleep."
  • Emmerich is among a growing number of established directors who have trashed the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Add Roland Emmerich to the list of well-established directors who have expressed their dislike of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The "Independence Day" director — whose new war movie "Midway" starring Woody Harrelson and Nick Jonas is out November 8 —  told Insider that he watches Marvel movies when he needs some help nodding off.

"When I see Marvel movies, my eyes glaze over," he said at a London junket for "Midway."

"I watch them on the plane so I can fall asleep."

Emmerich added his voice to those of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, who have both recently criticized the Marvel franchise.

Nick Jonas stars as ‘Bruno Gaido’ in MIDWAY

In an interview with Empire magazine (via ScreenRant), Scorsese said that Marvel movies weren't cinema, and compared them to theme parks.

Coppola went even further, telling journalists in Lyon after being awarded the Prix Lumiere for his contribution to cinema that: "Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is."

Emmerich stipulated that he thought the two legends of cinema did go a bit far with their criticisms, telling Insider: "I would say it's a little bit harsh but I'm not a fan of these movies either because they feel very formulaic."

He said: "I think what's a little bit disconcerting for me is how the stories are told. Because you have to have a knowledge of the characters, they don't even bother to tell you, 'Oh this is this character and he has these kinds of superpowers.

"... What's really happening is the storytelling is going down the drain a little bit."

Emmerich added that he preferred the origin stories over the multi-hero "Avengers" blockbusters because there is more storytelling involved.

Many people in the industry have come to the MCU's defense since it was trashed by Scorsese and Coppola.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn wrote a heartfelt Instagram post where he compared the dominance of superhero movies at the box office today to that of gangster movies when Scorsese and Coppola were in their prime.

"Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay," he wrote.

Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them “despicable”. Chris Evans says "never say never" to reprising his role as Captain America/Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but "it can't be a cash grab."

"It's not a hard no, but it's not an eager yes either," Evans said during a conversation with costar Scarlett Johansson for Variety's "Actors on Actors" series.

Evans, who stars in the new Rian Johnson-directed movie "Knives Out" and an upcoming Apple series called "Defending Jacob," added: "There are other things that I'm working on right now."

The 38-year-old actor starred in films like "Not Another Teen Movie" and the original "Fantastic Four" franchise before landing his role as Captain America. Evans previously turned down the part twice and made his debut as the superhero from Brooklyn in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger." He's portrayed the leader in several MCU films since then and his story line came to an end in 2019's blockbuster film "Avengers: Endgame."

At the end of movie, Steve traveled back in time to return the Infinity Stones to their respective destinations. After completing the mission, he stuck around to marry Peggy Carter and live out a happy life with her. When Steve traveled back to the present, the beloved superhero aged and was 106 years old.

He gave his iconic shield to Sam Wilson/Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie), which set up the character's upcoming Disney Plus series with Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

"I think Cap had such a tricky arc to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey," Evans told Johansson. "If you're going to revisit it, it can't be a cash grab. It can't be just because audiences would to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story?"

He added: "A lot of things would have to come together."

Regarding the film's ending, Evans said that "it'd be a shame to sour that."

"I'm very protective of it," he said. "It was such a precious time, and jumping onto the movie was a terrifying prospect to me. I said no a bunch of times, and there's a million and one ways it could have gone wrong and it could have backfired and I could have regretted it. And it didn't happen and to keep on testing that, it almost feels like maybe we should let this one sit."

When the new streaming subscription service launches on November 12, 2019, Disney+ will feature a ton of Marvel films. Titles like "Iron Man" and "Captain Marvel" will be available immediately, while recent blockbuster "Avengers: Endgame" will be available closer to the end of the year and movies like "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Black Panther" will roll out in  2020.

We'll also be blessed with spin-off series on fan-favorite characters in 2020. Loki will return with more of his mischief in a series aptly named "Loki," the Scarlet Witch will take us on a surreal spin in "WandaVision," and all sorts of alternative realities in the Marvel universe will be explored in the experimental animated series "What If?" There'll also be shows centered around new characters like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, though plot summaries and release dates are light as of publication time.

'The Falcon and Winter Soldier' - Fall 2020

"The Falcon and Winter Soldier" will be the first of the new onslaught of Marvel shows to hit Disney+.

The new series reportedly will take place after Captain America passes the proverbial torch (in the form of his shield) to Sam Wilson, aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie). The Falcon will be accompanied by Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), who will most likely be struggling with his past.

'Loki' - Spring 2021

Spoiler alert: Loki and all his mischief is coming back.

This is excellent news for those who have been mourning Loki's death in "Avengers: Endgame." Tom Hiddleston returns as the Nordic trickster, most likely due to the tesseract that enables him to travel through space and time.

'What If?' - Summer 2021

"What If?" is an animated series based in the Marvel Universe with the premise that changing one small thing in the narrative of the superheroes could change the course of the character and the world.

Major talent from Marvel include Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (the Hulk), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), and many more.

In late 2021, Hawkeye — a superhero without a superpower — will return to the screen in his own spin-off show.

In "Hawkeye," Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) will mentor and bestow his knowledge upon young Avenger Kate Bishop. The character has yet to be officially cast but is rumored to be Hailee Steinfeld.

'Ms. Marvel' - To be announced

"Ms. Marvel" will be a groundbreaking live-action show based on the comic by the same name.

The show will feature Kamala Khan, Marvel's first Muslim superhero to star in her own solo comic series, as a Pakistani-American living with her devout family in New Jersey while dealing with her superpowers.

'She-Hulk' - To be announced

Marvel has yet to give much information about "She-Hulk." but we do know some details.

Wanda and Sully from Monsters Inc Disney Plus new TV shows

  • Disney announced a slew of new TV shows planned to premiere on the coming streaming service, Disney Plus.
  • Several Marvel shows were among the new programming teased during a D23 Expo panel in Anaheim, California.
  • We're also getting a "Lizzie McGuire" series, a new "Monsters, Inc." spinoff show, a new "Muppets" series, and three "Star Wars" prequel shows.
  • Keep reading to see the full list of 19 new TV shows planned for Disney Plus.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

During Disney's D23 Expo event in Anaheim, California over the summer, the company announced a new slate of TV shows coming to its streaming service Disney Plus starting this fall.

Five of the shows will be available right away starting on November 12, 2019 — the day the streaming service officially launches. For the rest, some approximate premiere dates have been announced while others are still in pre-production stages.

According to a report from TV Line, the new shows will be released one episode at a time on a weekly basis (instead of the full-season drop style Netflix employs for most of its programming).

Keep reading to see the full list of 19 new TV shows planned for Disney Plus.

"Monsters at Work" is a sequel series which picks up after the events of "Monsters, Inc."

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

Starring Ben Feldman and Aisha Tyler as monsters named Tylor and Millie, respectively, this series follows a recent graduate from Monsters University who spent his college days training to scare children.

But just as Tylor arrives to work at the scream factory, the system is switched over to laugh-power (thanks to  the events of Pixar's "Monsters Inc." movie).

Mike and Sulley (Billy Crystal and John Goodman, respectively) will have "special appearances" on the show, but the story line will mainly center around a new cast of monsters as they navigate the new system prioritizing comedy over scariness.

"High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" takes the Disney Channel movie narrative into meta territory.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: November 12, 2019

In real life, Disney's "High School Musical" was filmed at a school called East High. So in the 10-episode scripted series coming to Disney Plus, the story follows a group of 2019 high-schoolers at East High who decide to put on their own production of "High School Musical: The Musical."

Disney is rebooting the Lizzie McGuire character for a new show about Lizzie's life as a millennial working in New York City.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

Bringing back "The Lizzie McGuire Show" creator Terri Minsky and star Hilary Duff, this new series shows our main character all grown up.

Lizzie is now 30 years old and living in New York City working her "dream job" as an "apprentice to a fancy decorator." Duff told the D23 Expo crowd that the little animated 13-year-old Lizzie will still be present and constantly talking inside the mind of the now-adult Lizzie.

"Forky Asks a Question" is a new collection of Pixar shorts all starring the "Toy Story 4" character.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: November 12, 2019

Forky, voiced by "Veep" and "Arrested Development" actor Tony Hale, is a toy made from trash who deals with existential anxiety regarding his creation and existence throughout "Toy Story 4."

Now, in a series of 10 short films, Forky will speak with other Pixar characters about how the world works.

On the episode previewed by Insider during the D23 Expo panel, Forky asks Ham (the "Toy Story" piggy bank character) an important question: "What is money?"

"Muppets Now" is a new "unscripted" series starring Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and the rest of the Muppets.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

Few details about this show were announced during the D23 Expo panel, other than its existence and title. Instead of a trailer, Disney showed a video of Kermit bickering with a Muppet lawyer about all the things he wasn't allowed to say about the new show.

Disney so far is only promising "a new kind of mayhem and laughter" with this short-form series.

Disney Plus is adding other unscripted shows, including "The World According to Jeff Goldblum."

When it premieres on Disney Plus: November 12, 2019

If you've ever wanted to watch Jeff Goldblum wander around the world and ask people questions about tattoo artistry, synchronized swimming, ice cream, jewelry, and more, then you're in luck. "The World According to Jeff Goldblum" is a 12-episode series following the actor on his own personal adventures.

This reality/documentary-esque series is a National Geographic production which is part of the November 12 rollout on Disney Plus

"Encore" is the first reality series premiering on Disney Plus, and it's all about musical theater nerds.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: November 12, 2019

Kristen Bell ("Frozen,""The Good Place") is the executive producer and host of a new reality series on Disney Plus which brings high school theater performers back to the stage for a — you guessed it — encore.

Bell and the "Encore" team found people of all ages who once starred in high school musical productions. Now the former performers will recreate the theater productions on stage again, sometimes singing in public for the first time in decades.

The first Disney Plus original of 2020 will be "Diary of a Female President."

When it premieres on Disney Plus: January 2020

Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin") is the executive producer and "recurring guest star" on the new series starring Tess Romero.

"Told using the narration from her diary, this half-hour single camera comedy follows 12-year-old Cuban-American girl Elena's journey through the trials of middle school, which set her on the path to ultimately become president of the United States," Disney's press release says.

Now onto the "Star Wars" shows. The first major series will be "The Mandalorian," coming November 12, 2019.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: November 12, 2019

"The Mandalorian" is Disney's first live-action "Star Wars" series, and it follows a bounty hunter in the "outer reaches of the galaxy." According to a timeline shown during the D23 Expo panel, "The Mandalorian" takes place after the events of "Return of the Jedi."

The series stars Pedro Pascal ("Game of Thrones"), MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad"), and more.

Disney also teased a currently unnamed "Star Wars" prequel series about Cassian Andor and the droid K-2SO.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

Stars Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk are reprising their roles from "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" for a series about the rebel spy and droid's years spent in the Rebellion before the events of "Rogue One" and "A New Hope."

Ewan McGregor will also reprise his "Star Wars" role for a prequel series about Obi Wan Kenobi.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy officially confirmed Ewan McGregor's return to the "Star Wars" universe "after secrets and fibs and not being able to talk about it" for years.

The live-action prequel series will follow Obi Wan in the same time period that "Solo: A Star Wars Story" takes place (which means it will be in the timeline following the events of "Revenge of the Sith"— the last "Star Wars" movie McGregor appeared in).

"The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" is the first new Marvel series set to premiere on Disney Plus.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: Fall 2020

Set after the events of "Avengers: Endgame," this series stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as Sam Wilson/Falcon and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, respectively.

As revealed in the closing minutes of "Endgame," Sam Wilson will be the new Captain America now that Steve Rogers retired from heroism in the current timeline. On the new show, Wilson and Bucky Barnes will be forced to team up and we'll learn more about their characters.

"WandaVision" is a mysterious new show described as "half classic sitcom, half Marvel Cinematic Universe [MCU] spectacular."

When it premieres on Disney Plus: Spring 2021

Few details about the actual plot of "WandaVision" are known, but Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen will definitely be returning as Vision and Wanda for this "wacky and fun" series. The teaser shown during D23 hinted at a link between "The Dick Van Dyke Show" sitcom from the 1960s and the superheroes features in the MCU.

Kat Dennings and Randall Park will reprise their roles from the MCU's "Thor" and "Ant-Man and The Wasp," and actress Kathryn Hahn has been cast as a "nosy neighbor" character.

"Loki" will follow everyone's favorite god of mischief in the events after "Avengers: Endgame" when he disappeared with the Tesseract.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: Spring 2021

While the heroic Avengers were messing with timelines in "Endgame," the Loki from the first "Avengers" movie grabbed the Tesseract and vanished. Where did he go? We'll find out when "Loki" premieres on Disney Plus in 2021.

"What If...?" is a new Marvel animated series that asks how the events we've already seen in the MCU movies might have worked out differently with one small change.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: Summer 2021

Many of the stars we've come to know in the MCU are returning to voice their characters for this animated anthology series. Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter in the "Captain America" movies, came out during the D23 Expo panel to tease one episode on which Peggy is the one turned into a super-soldier instead of Steve Rogers.

"Captain Carter" is just one possibility of many which will be explored in "What If...?" starting in 2021.

"Hawkeye" is the first MCU spinoff to focus on Clint Barton's character.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: Fall 2021

The "Hawkeye" series will show us more of what happened to Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner, after Thanos' devastating snap in "Avengers: Infinity War." We'll also see more of Kate Bishop, Barton's daughter who's starting to follow in her dad's footsteps.

In the comics, Bishop takes up the mantle of Hawkeye (a narrative teased in the beginning scene of "Avengers: Endgame").

Disney also announced three more Marvel series, including "Moon Knight."

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

As reported by Insider's Kirsten Acuna, "in the ['Moon Knight'] comics, Marc Spector is a mercenary who gets resurrected by an Egyptian moon god after being left for dead. He's a hero in New York City with multiple personalities."

"Ms. Marvel" will bring the first Pakistani-American superhero to life.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

"Ms. Marvel" is about a 16-year-old Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey named Kamala Khan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Ms. Marvel" will be written by British writer Bisha K. Ali, who's also acting as showrunner.

Last but not least, "She Hulk" will come to to Disney Plus.

When it premieres on Disney Plus: TBA

Also deriving from the Marvel comics, "She Hulk" tells the story of Jennifer Waters — the cousin of Bruce Banner in the comics who transforms into a green version of herself.

Disney Plus launches on November 12, and will cost $6.99 per month or $69.99 for a full year.

The streaming service will be available for a monthly or an annual rate, and Disney's press release says pricing varies outside the US. For each account, you'll be able to make up to seven profiles where you can save watch lists.

Disney says it will allow for a maximum of four concurrent streams. You'll be able to download anything from the Disney Plus catalogue to your phone or tablet device, enabling offline viewing.

Toy Story

  • Disney has made some of the most famous movies of all time, from animated family films to Marvel superhero franchises.
  • But with hundreds of movies in its lineup, Disney doesn't always score well with critics.
  • Here are the best and worst Disney movies of each decade based on critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As a new decade approaches, so does the promise of more Disney films that will forever be associated with the 2020s.

The entertainment and media giant has been cranking out films since "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was released nationwide in the US in 1938 and is now associated with some of the most beloved movies and franchises of all time.

Each year, Disney releases a number of films that garner critical acclaim, but inevitably not all of its films resonate with critics.

Hits from popular franchises like Marvel and Star Wars tend to score highly with critics and fans alike, although they can't compete with the high praise Disney consistently receives for its bread and butter: animated films.

Disney Plus

Disney's much-anticipated Disney Plus streaming service officially launched on Tuesday. While some users were having technical issues, others were able to explore the wide array of movies and TV shows available on the service.

Disney Plus costs $7 per month or $70 per year, which is within a few dollars of a basic Netflix streaming plan. The Disney service doesn't touch on every genre the way Netflix does, but because Disney owns so many other production companies, you won't be stuck with Steamboat Willie.

Here's what using Disney Plus looks like.

The home screen gives an overview of the content on Disney Plus. The top image switches among popular movies like "Avatar" and Disney's original shows and movies.

Scrolling down, you'll see many of the categories to browse through, including Disney originals, recommended content, and hit movies.

Disney seems to be going for nostalgia, highlighting Disney Channel favorites from the 1990s and 2000s, plus movies like "The Parent Trap."

The "out of the vault" section is also one of the major appeals of the service. Disney has historically circulated films in and out of its "Disney Vault," so older titles were not always available.

The "Star Wars" tab is an easy place for fans to access all "Star Wars" content, including every movie — with the originals available in 4K ultra-high-definition too.

Content in the tab is helpfully divided into intuitive categories, like movies, series, and shorts.

The Marvel tab is also likely to be a big draw. It has all the Marvel movies, plus TV series and other shorts.

The service has older Marvel cartoons too.

The National Geographic section has original content like "The World According to Jeff Goldblum" and critically acclaimed documentaries like "Free Solo."

The rest of the section is filled out with nature shows and informative series.

The Pixar section — with the familiar lamp logo — has every Pixar movie and short film.

Finally, the Disney section highlights new original content, but it also has sections for movies from the vault and old Disney Channel shows.

When you search at the top of the screen, you can type whatever you're looking for, but Disney Plus also offers helpful suggestions by directing you to collections like Disney Channel original movies or the "Muppets" videos.

The "Disney Through the Decades" collection is a neat package that lets you watch titles dating all the way back to the 1920s.

You can also filter by only Disney Plus originals.

The movies tab also has filters you can apply, including comedy and documentary.

When you watch something through the service, the controls allow you to skip forward or backward 10 seconds, pause, adjust the volume, and make it full screen.

Changing audio and caption languages is done through a button in the upper right of the screen.

Disney's not done releasing deleted scenes for "Avengers: Endgame" yet.

When Disney's streaming site, Disney Plus, launched Tuesday, fans were excited to discover a new deleted scene for the film featuring Tony Stark and his daughter, Morgan, all grown-up.

The scene features Katherine Langford ("13 Reasons Why"), who was supposed to appear as an adult version of Tony and Pepper Potts' daughter in a dreamlike sequence

Disney released the just over two-minute scene with and without commentary from directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

What happens

After Tony snaps his fingers wearing the Iron Gauntlet, he's transported to a mysterious place. As he tries to gather what's going on, he hears a voice call out to him.

Tony turns around to see a grown version of Morgan, played by Langford. Tony quickly realizes the young woman is his daughter.

"I guess it worked," Tony tells his daughter.

"Yeah, it worked for me. I got to live, grow up. For you, I can't answer," she responds, ominously.

Morgan, of course, is referencing Tony's impending death. The force of using the gauntlet is too much for a human to survive. Tony grapples with his decision and tells Morgan he thinks he may have made a mistake. She tells him he's proud of him and sad, but that someone had to make that decision.

"I'm happy we had the time that we did, and that you were there for me until you couldn't be," Morgan tells her dad.

"If you're happy. I'm happy," says Tony.

The two part with Tony kissing his daughter and whispering "I love you, 3,000" in her ear.

Why Tony sees a version of his daughter grown up

tony stark avengers endgame

The Russo brothers said they sent Tony to the Way Station in order for him to reconcile something that was unresolved in his life and so he could come to peace with the decision he just made by sacrificing his life for everyone else.

"This is originally what happened after Tony snapped his fingers," said Joe Russo. "We sent him to what we would call the Way Station to mirror what had happened to Thanos with his daughter in '[Avengers] Infinity War.'"

The powers of the Infinity Stones are pretty limitless and are able to show him an older version of his daughter from the future to let him know it's OK to move on.

Why it was cut

avengers endgame tony and pepper reunited

The Russos said the scene ultimately felt like it took away from the emotional impact of the rest of the scene and made the film feel like it was neverending.

"When we put this in the film we felt like it ground the movie to a halt, and he does something similar in the next sequence when he gives his own eulogy," Joe Russo said of the decision to leave the scene on the cutting room floor.

At this point, it felt like "Endgame" was starting to have too many endings.

"When you have too many sequences in a row, you can dilute the value of each one of them," said Joe Russo.

"Because this adult version of Morgan was never in the film, as we would watch it in post, we started to feel like we didn't have a lot of emotional connection — even though this is a wonderful actor — we didn't have a lot of emotional connection to the character because we had never seen her before," added Anthony Russo of why it was easier to cut this moment.

Why it's better that way

avengers endgame tony stark morgan

If Tony had that experience after snapping his fingers then we could presume that anytime someone uses the gauntlet that they have a similar experience.

That would mean that Bruce Banner would also have had a similar experience after he snapped his fingers to bring everyone back and that Thanos also would have had another other worldly experience after snapping everyone away at the end of "Infinity War."

That makes things a bit more complicated and muddled.

As well, the scene ends with Tony whispering "I love you, 3,000" into Morgan's ear. That probably would have taken away from the emotional punch of Tony's message to his young daughter and Pepper in one of the following scenes.

You can watch both versions of the scene on Disney Plus.

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Anthony Mackie — who is set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the upcoming Disney Plus series "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"— has opened up about what exactly it's like for him to be the new wielder of Captain America's shield.

In an interview with Deadline, Mackie was asked what exactly it's like to carry such an iconic symbol around with him.

"You know what, to be honest, it's very emotional," he replied. "I've been in the business for 20 years and I've been fortunate enough to do some amazing stuff and work with amazing people. For me, to be a Black man in 2019 and be given he helm of Captain America with the history of Black men in this country is a monumental step, not only in entertainment, but also in my life."

falcon winter soldier disney plus

"It's been extremely emotional," Mackie continued. "Look, my grandfather was a sharecropper, you know what I mean? There's a lot of history and pain and triumph and joy that comes along with me being Captain America."

Mackie made his MCU debut as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the 2014 film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." He subsequently reprised his role in "Avengers: Age of Ultron,""Ant-Man,""Captain America: Civil War,""Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame."

As "Endgame" drew to a close, an elderly Steve Rogers effectively retired as Captain America -- passing the red, white and blue vibranium shield to Sam. "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" rejoins Sam and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, who are left to deal with "Endgame'"s aftermath.

Directed by Kari Skogland, "The Falcon and The Winter Soldier" stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell and Daniel Brühl and will be available on Disney Plus in fall 2020.

Robert Downey Jr. is reprising his role as Iron Man on a Disney Plus animated show

iron man

  • In an interview with Buzzfeed, Jeff Goldblum said Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man in Marvel's upcoming animated "What If...?" series.
  • The Disney Plus animated series will follow one-off "what if" scenarios if events in Marvel movies happened differently.
  • The series won't be available to stream until 2021.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Actor Robert Downey Jr. will be back to voice Tony Stark aka Iron Man in Marvel Studios' "What If...?"— that's according to Jeff Goldblum.

The MCU's inaugural hero bowed out of the universe in Joe and Anthony Russo's "Avengers: Endgame." In the movie, he met his poetic death by sacrificing himself to ensure the safety of the universe from Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his minions' threats. However, it seems like it won't be that long until fans get to see him reprise him the role — at least, this time in an animated series.

"What If...?," which was announced during Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con panel, will imagine how things would've panned out if certain key events in The Infinity Saga went down differently.

grandmaster thor ragnarok

Coming exclusively to Disney Plus, the show won't have any impact on the established MCU canon. Despite this, it allows the series creative freedom to tackle interesting scenarios like Peggy Carter as Captain America; Bucky fighting off zombie Captain America; skinny Steve Rogers essentially becoming Iron Man; and T'Challa assuming the role of Star-Lord rather than Peter Quill - all of which was teased on "Expanding the Universe."

Jeffrey Wright, on the other hand, will play the show's narrator, Uatu aka The Watcher. However, one unannounced episode is reportedly bringing back Downey as Stark.

In a recent Buzzfeed interview, Goldblum talked about reprising his role as The Grandmaster in "What If...?" and as he recalled recording his part, he revealed that Downey is set to voice Iron Man in the same episode. "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Thor: Love and Thunder" director Taika Waititi, also joins them as Korg.

Sadly, he didn't reveal any plot specifics about the episode.

Hey. Well, we're talking about it in fact. You know, I hope so. I love Taika Waititi. He's a great director and a friend of mine. So I hope so, but I played the part again a couple of days ago. I went to the Disney Studios and I recorded the Grandmaster's voice for an episode of a show that's going to be on Disney+ called What If…? where it's an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel. And this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice in that. And Korg, Taika Waititi, had already recorded his voice for that. So yeah, I enjoyed it for a couple of hours. I enjoyed doing that again. So the Grandmaster is well.

Goldblum and Waititi are among the 25 confirmed MCU actors voicing their roles for "What If...?," but it's worth noting that Marvel Studios have yet to announce that Downey is also involved in the animated series.

the watcher jeffrey wright

Given this, it's for the best that fans wait for an official information before getting attached to the notion that the actor is reprising the genius, billionaire character in the show. In the event that this is actually the case, the idea of all three hilarious characters from the universe with different brands of humor uniting is already interesting.

"Endgame" beautifully wrapped up Stark's MCU journey with Downey permanently hanging up his superhero suit. Given this, many assumed it would at least take a while before the actor reprises the role if Marvel Studios still has some story for him. However, considering that "What If...?" is separated from the universe, his supposed return won't have any impact to how Iron Man's narrative ended. In any case, the animated series won't be out until summer 2021 so a significant amount of time will have passed since Downey's outing, so this might actually work.
