The INSIDER Summary:

  • ABC released a new trailer for its next Marvel show, "Inhumans," which follows a royal group of superpowered humans, at San Diego Comic-Con.
  • While fans like it better than the first one released in June, many were disappointed by the footage.
  • Fans reportedly laughed — not in a good way — at the new trailer.
  • "Inhumans" was originally slated to be a movie from Marvel and was more recently downgraded to a TV show on ABC with an IMAX preview.

ABC released a new trailer for its next Marvel show, "Inhumans," at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday and fans have a lot to say about it. Most of those things are not good.

The show follows a royal family of superhumans which includes characters like Black Bolt (Anson Mount), his wife Medusa (Serinda Swan), and his brother Maximus (Iwan Rheon, "Game of Thrones").

inhumans

Fans tore apart the first trailer released June 29 as laughable, disparaging its costumes and effects. While fans admit the trailer is better than the first one released in June, there are still some things about it that are off to people. After the Comic-Con trailer for the show dropped online, reactions were extremely mixed with a lot of fans referring to it as looking "cheap."

The YouTube comments on the trailer range from calling it a "cheap Chinese knockoff of the X-Men" to people being insulted Marvel released this and not the "Infinity War" trailer that premiered at D23 Expo.

The footage that screened for fans at Comic-Con was reportedly laughed at as well.

They weren't laughing in a good way. Slashfilm's editor Peter Sciretta previewed 15 minutes of the show at Comic-Con and said it looked terrible.

Here are his full thoughts:

"Wow #Inhumans looks worse than I ever possibly could have imagined. Badly written, horrible costumes, cheaply looking designs, film school level looking visual effects, unmotivated overlit cinematography, unnecessary slow motion shots. The crowd laughed at the footage."

Eric Vespe at Ain't it Cool News also didn't have good things to say.

Still, some are willing to give it a shot.

"Inhumans" will premiere in IMAX September 1 before it comes to ABC September 29.

daredevil punisher netflix 2

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Netflix and Marvel debuted the first footage for "The Punisher at San Diego Comic-Con Friday.
  • The show will star Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle who first made his debut in season two of "Daredevil."
  • The clip showed a flashback of Castle playing guitar to his daughter before cutting to present day and showing the Punisher taking out some men.
  • He's going after everyone responsible for the murder of his family.
  • The show will be on Netflix in November. No exact release date was given.

San Diego Comic-Con is well known as a garden of heavenly delights for anyone interested in TV or movies, especially if those things have any geek cred. Well, SDCC 2017 just offered up our first major scenes of "The Punisher" from Netflix, and the footage was freakin' amazing.

CinemaBlend's own Nick Venable was in attendance Friday night during the Marvel's The Defenders panel in Hall H, when the crowd was surprised by an awesome ass load of scenes from The Punisher. Here's what they showed.

The clip began with shots of Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) playing guitar with his, later, dearly departed daughter Lisa, and then playing the same song alone, likely in the wake of her death. The mournful moments don't last long, though, as we're then immediately shown Frank as he drives a car over a man and his motorcycle.

Frank is officially in Punisher mode, my friends. The video then takes us to Juarez, where a guy is enjoying getting seduced by a few lovely ladies. Unfortunately for him, Frank is watching the scene through the scope of a sniper rifle, and the sound rings out seconds before we watch the man's head get shot off in a bloody burst. The camera then zips back to Frank, but it's revealed that he's actually in El Paso. Uh, holy shit. Did Frank just kill a man in another country without a remote controlled device? Yes. Yes, I think he did.

"The Punisher" footage then gives us a glimpse at Frank going after a (relatively) respectable looking older fellow with a suitcase in an office building. Frank corners him in a bathroom stall, and the man tries to reason with him, noting that, at this point, he's already killed all the people responsible for the deaths of his family. He won't be placated, though, that's just not the Frank we know and love, so he chokes the guy out as two unsuspecting men walk in and begin to pee. Frank kills him while the other men assume some clandestine sexy times are happening in the stall. That's when we got the money shot, and it's revealed that Frank has been wearing his infamous Punisher shirt for his bathroom escapade.

As you can imagine, this is when the audience in Hall H erupted into cheers. Now, I don't know about you, but I got some serious goosebumps just reading over these few disconnected scenes from what will be "The Punisher" on Netflix. The clip didn't give us a premiere date, but from what we've heard earlier, it's possible that the show will be up on the streamer sometime in November. This will give the series some nice breathing room from the premiere of "The Defenders" on August 18.

We'll be sure to get even more details about the show as the debut nears, so stay tuned.

The new 'Thor: Ragnarok' trailer teases a huge change to the God of Thunder you may have completely overlooked

The INSIDER Summary:

  • A new "Thor: Ragnarok" trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday.
  • It shows Thor gathering together a team to take down new villain Hela.
  • Near the end, Thor is seen with lightning coming out of his eyes.
  • Some immediately thought this could be a Thor clone, Ragnarok, like the title of the film.
  • Others believe it's a version of the character called Rune King Thor.

Marvel released the official trailer for its next "Thor" movie at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday, and while you may have been busy cheering over the return of the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth), his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), or his teamup with the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), you may have overlooked one very big reveal in the trailer.

About two minutes into the trailer, we see Thor seemingly pop out of the sky and face new villain Hela (Cate Blanchett). But something's off. Lightning is coming off of him and his eyes glow weirdly.

lightning thor

What's going on? There's a simple explanation.

There's one of two characters who that could be. It's either Ragnarok, a Thor clone, or, more fans believe this could be Rune King Thor, a reborn version of Thor.

Confused? We'll explain.

Who is Ragnarok?

thor clone ragnarok

Ragnarok is a cyborg clone of Thor. Ever since the title "Thor: Ragnarok" was released for the movie, we've been waiting to see the Thor clone pop up in marketing for the film.

However, Ragnrarok was a clone created by Tony Stark, Hank Pym, and Fanastic Four member, Reed Richards after Thor went missing and was thought to be dead. Without getting into the weeds too much, Ragnarok was used to fight superheroes in the "Civil War" comics who were against the superhero registration act that was brought up in the 2016 movie of the same name.

Many fans think the lightning we see in the "Ragnarok" trailer is more reminiscent of another version of Thor who appeared briefly in the comics.

Who is Rune King Thor?

rune king thor

Rune King Thor is an all powerful version of Thor who is able to tap into the power of the Odinforce, an infinite source of energy. In the comics, to become the Rune King, Thor had to go on a journey that involved three steps: Sacrifice, gaining knowledge of the past, and gaining knowledge of ancient runes. YouTube user ComicsExplained breaks this all down really well if you're interested for the long version

If you want the short of it, here's where it gets a little wacky. In the six-part 1998 "The Mighty Thor: Disassembled" Ragnarok series, Thor sacrificed and pulled out his eyes in order to learn the history of Asgard.

thor rips out eyes

From there, he hung himself from a chain for days to gain knowledge of the runes.

thor hang

If that last part sounds familiar, the first teaser trailer for the film showed Thor wrapped in chains.

thor ragnarok chains

After Thor does all of that he is reborn Rune King Thor and is ridiculously powerful. It's not really clear how powerful he is, but he's virtually unstoppable since he's omniscient and has rune magic.

rune king thor

Maybe it's some combination of the two, but we're leaning towards Rune King Thor.

It's not unlikely for Marvel to adapt the characters in a way they see fit for the big screen. It would be a bit strange for Marvel to have a movie called "Thor: Ragnarok" without having a character of the same name in it. But it could also be too strange a concept to adapt straight from the comics. Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't have any reason to turn his back on Thor at the moment. Plus, how silly does it sound to have a robot version of Thor in a movie?

It's worth mentioning that Ragnarok is also the term Asgardians, like Thor, use to describe the cycle of death and rebirth. It's very clear that what happens to Asgard when Hela arrives and destroys it only to rebuild it in her image is also Ragnarok, an event.

asgard destruction

As much as I'd love to see Thor go up against a clone version of himself, we're betting the Thor in the trailer is an extra powerful version of the God of Thunder — something that may be needed to take down Hela, and later Thanos in "Infinity War." While we doubt we'd see Thor gouge his own eyes out in a Disney movie, it's a better story than giving us a cyborg. Seeing Thor go on a sacrificial journey of self-discovery would show how far his character has come since 2011's "Thor."

hela thor ragnarok

Marvel released the official trailer for "Thor: Ragnarok," the third "Thor movie, at San Diego Comic-Con. While April's teaser trailer revealed a few new faces joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Comic-Con trailer introduced a few more characters we'll see in the sequel.

"Thor: Ragnarok" will be in theaters November 3, 2017.  Keep reading for a quick intro to the new characters.

Anjelica Oswald contributed to an earlier version of this story.

Two time-Oscar winner Cate Blanchett ("The Aviator,""Blue Jasmine") will play villain Hela, who destroys Asgard in the movie.

If her costume looks familiar, there's a reason why.

In the comics, Hela is the Asgardian goddess of death, and the daughter of Loki.

Yup! Hela is the daughter of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Angerboda, a Frost Giantress. We'll see if the movie decides to rewrite Hela as another relative of Loki.

In the comics, Hela rules over the dead in the realms of Hel and Niffleheim.

Here's another look at her character with the huge thorn-like spikes coming right out her head.

This look is a throwback to the character in the comics.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Marvel showed new "Thor: Ragnarok" footage at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday.
  • It shows Thor being captured by The Grandmaster, played by Jeff Goldblum.
  • We also meet Valkyrie, The Grandmaster's associate, played by Tessa Thompson.
  • Thor is set up to fight other people on The Grandmaster's planet — including Hulk.

Saturday night always belongs to Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-Con. The company strategically always takes the last slot in Hall H during the most popular day of the convention, and in the last 10 years they have never failed to get fans incredibly excited for everything that's coming up on their slate. This year was definitely no exception, in large part thanks to the impressive and hilarious extended footage that was shown from writer/director Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok."

Starting with no real set-up, but also a good dose of exposition, the footage began with an unconscious Thor (Chris Hemsworth) waking up to discover that he has been strapped to a chair and is slowly moving down a long, seemingly endless tunnel. As the walls begin to morph and change, showing colorful designs and images, a calming female voice speaks to the Asgardian, explaining, "Fear not, for you are found. You are home. There is no going back. No one leaves this place."

The mysterious voice then goes on to explain where exactly "this place" is. While the walls illustrate what is being said, it's revealed that Thor has found himself of Sakaar, a planet that is surrounded by cosmic gateways and "lives on the edge of the known and unknown." It's identified as a collection point for lost and unloved things, where they can be found and loved -- "And nobody loves you more than The Grandmaster." Thor struggles to fully comprehend what he is hearing, as the voice goes on to explain that The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) is the creator of the Contest Of Champions, and that everyone on the world belongs to him.

jeff goldblum grandmaster

Wrapping up, the voice explains that Thor will get to meet The Grandmaster in 10 seconds -- and suddenly the images on the walls begin to move faster and faster -- not too dissimilar to the notorious "Willy Wonka" boat ride. The Avenger begins to yell in panic, but in a flash the walls totally disappear and Thor is simply left sitting in his chair in the middle of a room surrounded by The Grandmaster's guards. Sitting about 20 feet in front of him is his new owner, and behind him are Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Topaz (played by Taika Waititi's personal good luck charm, Rachel House). Looking his new captive up and down, The Grandmaster exclaims, "He's wonderful!" -- before confirming that he is in fact a "he" with Valkyrie.

The Grandmaster (who is actually the brother of The Collector from "Guardians of the Galaxy") couldn't be more happy with his new prize -- but Topaz clearly isn't too impressed. While the ruler of Sakaar lauds Valkyrie - who he calls Scrapper 142 -- and notes that she always brings him the best stuff, Topaz takes every opportunity to put her down. "What do I always say?" The Grandmaster jubilantly exclaims, "She is the... it starts with a 'B.'" Without hesitation. Topaz replies, "Trash." Confused, Grandmaster wonders if Topaz was just waiting to say 'Trash," and re-explains that he was looking for a 'B' word -- to which Topaz replies, "Bitch."

thor ragnarok tessa thompson valkyrie

The word The Grandmaster was looking for is 'Best," and then he reveals something significant: it was Valkyrie who brought him his great champion -- who we eventually learn is none other than The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Requesting a closer look at his new 'contender,' the celestial monarch has his chair pushed closer to Thor -- but it's this that pushes the Asgardian past his breaking point. He proclaims that he is not for sale, and successfully manages to break out of his wrist restraints, but this action is followed by Valkyrie pressing a button that activates some kind of shock implant in Thor's neck. While Topaz protests, Grandmaster agrees to pay "Scrapper 142" the price of 10 million units. Lovingly brushing Grandmaster's cheek with her hand as she walks towards Thor (something he clearly likes), Valkyrie gets ready to move the hero to his new holding area. "You'll pay for this," Thor says weakly. "Yeah, right, I'll pay for this," Valkyrie responds.

The Grandmaster instructs that Thor should be made to feel welcome -- but the next scene has him roughly shoved into his quarters, which he shares with some other strangers. While Thor is clearly stressed, an alien sitting against the wall tells him to calm down and introduces himself as Korg (voiced by Taika Waititi). While he looks like a lumbering pile of rocks, Korg explains that he shouldn't let that be intimidating, and while doing a walk-and-talk with Thor around the circular cell he identifies himself as a leader of the inmates. Giving some back story, he says that in his old life he tried to start a revolution on his own planet, but it didn't work out so well due to the fact that he didn't print out enough pamphlets, and only his mom and her boyfriend actually showed up. Meanwhile, Thor tries to run ahead, but almost as soon as he leaves the screen he appears again running up from behind Korg. Naturally, this confuses the hell out of the Avenger, but Korg notes, "Yeah, this whole place is a circle. Not a normal circle. Like a freaky circle."

thor lightning god ragnarok trailer

Thor inquires about doing battle with the Grandmaster's champion, but Korg dismisses this idea saying that he'll just end up like Doug -- who is lying dead against the wall. Korg has managed to stay alive because he only participates in warm-up fights, noting that while he's made of rocks, they are "perishable rocks." Forever the prideful hero, Thor proclaims that he is going to fight the champion, win, and get away from Sakaar. "That's exactly what Doug used to say," Korg replies. "See you later, New Doug!"

From there we got to see the brand new trailer for "Thor: Ragnarok," which thankfully premiered online shortly after it was shown in Hall H. And you can watch it below!

It has been made very clear that "Thor: Ragnarok" will be very different than the previous "Thor" movies we've seen, and the new footage most definitely emphasized that fact. Much in the same way that Marvel Studios gave James Gunn the freedom to make the movies he wanted to make with "Guardians of the Galaxy," the third "Thor" movie is completely drenched in the auteur stylings and sensibilities of writer/director Taika Waititi, and that is beyond exciting. Not only does the movie look incredibly funny, but also beautifully colorful, and very, very weird.

We have really been waiting years for this one, but thankfully there isn't too much waiting left to go. Marvel has set plans to have "Thor: Ragnarok" in theaters on November 3rd, and given that it's one of our most anticipated titles of the fall, you can be sure that we here at CinemaBlend will have plenty more updates about the feature for you between now and the release date. In the meantime, hit the comments section below to tell us your thoughts on the described footage, as well as the new trailer!

REVIEW: Netflix's big superhero teamup 'The Defenders' is slow to start, but fun when the heroes are united

$

defenders elevator

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for Netflix's series "The Defenders."

Marvel's big superhero teamup, "The Defenders," is coming to Netflix in August. The show joins together the heroes from Netflix's four hero series: Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and billionaire Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones).

They'll work together to take down The Hand — a corrupt organization of ninjas obsessed with immortality — led by Sigourney Weaver who joins the cast as the mysterious Alexandra.

INSIDER previewed the first four episodes of the show coming next month. While "The Defenders" is a bit slow to start, Marvel fans will want to sit through this one, especially if they've already invested 50+ hours in the four other shows.

Why you should care: This is the big culmination of Netflix's four Marvel shows, "Daredevil,""Jessica Jones,""Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist."

Since the series' announcement in 2013, fans have patiently been waiting for "The Defenders" so they could finally see the four heroes band together. It's the "Avengers" lite, but over the course of eight hours. It takes place a month after the first season of "Iron Fist."

What's hot: Daredevil's fight scenes, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist being put in his place, and sequences where multiple heroes interact.

iron fist luke cage

As always, Matt Murdock's fight scenes are show-stealers. One to look out for is when the lawyer-turned-masked-vigilante flips across balconies and down stairwells to take down common criminals. Those who have been waiting for the return of Jessica Jones have much to cheer about as well. She's still slightly broken, drinking copiously, and is not taking crap from anyone. When the two are paired together, the unlikely team are quite the duo.

Sigourney Weaver joins as an original Marvel villain, one who pulls all of the strings from afar, but whose appearance shouldn't be underestimated. Like most of the characters in this universe, she has a few hidden talents of her own.

One of the best things that had us smiling, and maybe shouldn't have, was the self-righteous Danny Rand/Iron Fist finally being called out by another one of the superheros. He effectively gets put in his place and is told to check his privilege. If you were frustrated with the first season of Iron Fist, it's a satisfying must-watch scene.

What's not: The show's pace.

the defenders

Way too much time is spent showing the individual characters doing their own thing. The way the initial episodes are strung together, it feels more like we're watching separate, new seasons for each of the four shows rather than one show connecting different characters.

defenders iron fist

When they all finally come together, fans may be sad to learn the mini-series will already be halfway over. Unlike every other 13-episode Marvel Netflix series, "The Defenders" is a short eight episodes, making you wish they all came together sooner. Since the first four episodes are a bit slow, I'm concerned the next four may feel rushed to take down the organization both Iron Fist and Daredevil have been trying to take down for seasons. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

The bottom-line: Watch it for Daredevil and Jessica Jones alone, but go in with guarded expectations.

the defenders jessica jones daredevil

If you've been investing any time in Netflix's Marvel series, you're going to watch this anyway. If you're not as big of a fan of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Daredevil and Jessica Jones shine in each of their scenes — and especially the ones where they're allowed screentime together. A highlight is a scene straight from the trailers when Daredevil takes Jessica's scarf at one point to cover his face when fighting off combatants.

Trudge through the premiere and you'll be rewarded with an awesome Matt Murdock fight sequence at the start of episode two and Iron Fist being put in his place.

Grade:

B (This may be generous, but it's also after only watching half of the mini-series which has the potential to get equally better or worse.)

All eight episodes of "The Defenders" will premiere on Netflix August 18.

Thor will have more of Chris Hemsworth's personality in 'Thor: Ragnarok'

Thor RagnarokThe INSIDER Summary:

  • The second trailer for "Thor: Ragnarok" shows a more playful side to Thor.
  • The director explained that Thor is definitely closer to Chris Hemsworth's personality in this film.
  • He also considers "Ragnarok" to be somewhat of a standalone film for the franchise.

Director Taika Waititi says Thor in "Thor: Ragnarok" feels closer to Chris Hemsworth in his personality than fans have seen before. "Thor: Ragnarok" generated much excitement over the weekend when Waititi, Hemsworth and his fellow cast mates appeared at San Diego Comic-Con and debuted the second trailer for "Ragnarok." Matching the colorful if not offbeat tone of the first trailer for "Thor: Ragnarok" in April, the new trailer even yielded some surprises, including a big reveal where Hulk speaks, albeit like a 2-year-old, to the eponymous character.

The trailer, like the first teaser, also included more wit from Hemsworth (following his already classic line,I know him … he’s a friend from work!”), where he playfully claims to Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) that he defeated Hulk in their head-to-head match in The Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) battle arena on Sakaar. And while Hemsworth has certainly had funny lines in both the first two "Thor" films and "Avengers" films, apparently the charm he’s going to display in "Thor: Ragnarok" is even closer to the actor’s personality in real life.

In an interview with Variety at SDCC, Waititi explained the Thor and Hemsworth parallels:

“We’re actually making Thor closer to Chris and his personality and who he is … he’s funny — a lot funnier and a lot more colloquial because he’s spent time on Earth … Personally, I think he’s the best version of Thor, just quietly. Not to take away from the any of the other films, but in order for me to feel comfortable making this film, I wanted to move away from the other films and make something that was kind of a standalone Thor film. That your really didn’t need to see the first two to understand the (third) film.”

thor loki thor ragnarokWhile Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor has hardly become stale in his solo and "Avengers" films, it’s fun to see how Waititi is willing to raise the stakes and present fans with what is promising to be a lighter take on the God of Thunder.

After all, it’s pretty apparent in his film portrayals, if not his bubbly demeanor in public, that Hemsworth is quite an affable individual, so Waititi simply seems to be taking advantage of the actor’s strengths to see his unique vision through. Clearly Waititi sees something in Hemsworth that matches his quirky filmmaking sensibilities (he previously directed the offbeat indie films "What We Do in the Shadows" and "Hunt for the Wilderpeople"), which helps to explain why the helmsman pushed his creative boundaries and had the actor and his cast mates improvise 80 percent of "Thor: Ragnarok."

As it turns out, Waititi’s colorful and comedic approach may give fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe their last chance to laugh for a while, since "Avengers: Infinity War" co-directors Joe and Anthony are teasing some “intense surprises” for the next Avengers chapter in the May 2018 — including some possible deaths of major characters.

A 'Guardians of the Galaxy' ride replaced an iconic Disneyland attraction and it's a far superior experience

The INSIDER Summary:

  • A new "Guardians of the Galaxy"-themed ride opened in Disneyland May 27, 2017.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout! replaced the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride in Disneyland's California Adventure.
  • Despite fan concerns over replacing the classic, it's a much-needed and fun update to a ride that may not have been relatable to younger generations anymore.
  • Little kids loved it, too, wanting to re-ride it immediately.
  • It's one of the park's most popular rides so make sure you either get there early or nab a FastPass.

Disclosure: I'm a big theme park junkie.

Ever since Disney Parks announced a "Guardians of the Galaxy" ride was coming to California Adventure in Disneyland, I couldn't wait to try it out. It's arguably one of Marvel's best movies since 2008's "Iron Man," and it was only a matter of time until the Mouse House decided to implement it into one of its theme parks. "Guardians of the Galaxy" also happens to be a personal favorite of mine so while in Anaheim, California for Disney's D23 Expo 2017, I stopped by the parks to check it out.

Not everyone was as excited as me. A lot of Disneyland fans were upset and frustrated their beloved Tower of Terror was getting pushed aside for something that felt like part of Disney's attempt to streamline its parks into a reflection of its newer, more successful brands

hollywood hotel guardians of the galaxy breakout

I was slightly hesitant about going on the ride because "Guardians" had a lot to live up to. Would the ride be dumbed down for youngsters? Would it be less scary than Terror of Tower or would the drops be less intense because it's a Marvel-themed ride now?

All of those worries faded when I left the ride grinning with what I could only describe as nerd tears running down my face. People cheered and even laughed around me the entire time as we skyrocketed up and down the transformed ride. I was actually a bit sad I opted for the FastPass on the ride so early in the morning when I could have waited in a 45-minute line (I'll explain). I couldn't wait to go on it again.

What the Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout! ride is all about

the collector aether

If you've never seen the 2014 movie, the ride revolves around one of the movie's oddest character's, The Collector. He's one of the oldest living beings in the Marvel Universe, and, as his name suggests, he has a penchant for collecting rare and unique objects. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" ride lets us commoners see his vast collection, which ranges from a cocoon teased at the end of the 2014 movie to a robot from "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

The Collector's latest addition is the Guardians of the Galaxy and they're trying to find a way to break out of his prison. That's what we're here to help with.

Why it left me wanting to go back again — it's basically a two-in-one ride

I grew up going to Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. One thing Disney excels at more than other theme parks is making you feel completely immersed in other worlds when you go on a ride, whether it's Star Tours, Cars Land, or even A Small World. I was especially impressed by the layout and detailed design that went into Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout.

Before you even get on the actual ride, there is a lot to take in that will make any Marvel fan giddy. The plants in front of the attraction are labeled with fun, quirky space names to look at while you're trying to stay cool in line in the Anaheim sun. As you get closer to the entryway, a large golden statue of the Collector himself (Benicio del Toro) welcomes you into his humble abode.

Stepping into the converted Tower of Terror will immediately transport any Marvel fan into a chamber full of Easter eggs. (You can see a roundup of 36 spotted on the ride here.) Even if you're not a big Marvel fan, it's tough to be anything but overwhelmed by all of the objects scattered throughout the room, against the walls, and dangling from above at varying heights.

gotg mission breakout disneylandcosmo ultron bot

In contrast, the Tower of Terror ride guides you through an old dusty hotel. The detail is great, but you're not going to spend much time staring at this stuff. If you're missing the feel of an old haunted mansion or hotel, head over to Disneyland's The Haunted Mansion.

tower of terror inside

Portraits adorn the walls and I was amused to catch sight of one which shows The Collector hanging out playing a boardgame with Jeff Goldblum's "Thor: Ragnarok" character, The Grandmaster, a guy who is really obsessed with games. It was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con the two are brothers, so it makes the photo all the more enjoyable if you know what you're looking at.

collector jeff goldblum.JPG

And if you think you'll see everything the first time around, guess again. Imagineer Joe Rhode told Inside the Magic that some of the Easter eggs refer to things that haven't even occurred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.

"There are Easter eggs about stories you know, there are easter eggs about things that will soon happen, and there are easter eggs about future developments that no one knows yet,"said Rhode in May. "There are also clues and things from completely other universes."

Tricky, tricky, Marvel!

If you get bored looking at all of the objects, the center of the room plays a video on loop featuring the "Guardians of the Galaxy" actors. It's not a rehashed scene from one of the movies for the ride. "Guardians" director James Gunn actually filmed the scene with the original cast just for the Disneyland attraction so it feels like something extra special.

video.JPG

After leaving the first chamber, you're sent into the Collector's office, which is covered wall-to-wall in even more Marvel goodies. As we were too busy eyeing up all of the items in the room, a tail suddenly scurries across the wall above, and you realize it's Rocket Raccoon. He eventually pops up to talk to the crowd and give elaborate details of his prison breakout plan.

I happened to stand in the worst possible spot where I couldn't get a good eyeful of Rocket, but I knew he was "there" speaking to the crowd and that was a really nice touch for younger kids who love the raccoon.

My group was then shuffled straight to our elevator pod, passing by even more items in the Collector's massive treasure trove that I didn't have enough time to catch sight of, and the real fun began.

Why it was better than Tower of Terror

If you've ever taken a ride on Tower of Terror, Mission: Breakout! straps you into the same familiar six rows you've sat in before. Disney didn't reinvent the wheel with its revamped attraction, but it succeeded in creating an immersive experience that elicited an entirely new emotion while riding the drop tower — pure joy.

The quirky prison escape transformed the drop tower experience from one of horror to extreme delight. I didn't want to leave and from the cheers and laughter within our car, it didn't sound like anyone else wanted to either.

Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission BREAKOUT 05_17_DCA_ 2407

As soon as the doors closed and Rocket Raccoon throws on Pat Benatar's 1980's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" that was the moment I knew we were in for a treat. You can't have a "Guardians" movie without an exceptional tune married to the scene, and Mission: Breakout! surprised me by including one I wasn't even expecting to hear.

From there, we were catapulted into the middle of a scene that may as well have felt like it was in "Guardians 1.5" with Rocket guiding us along the way. For fans of the movie, it's worth the wait just to see the additional bonus sequences of Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, and Baby Groot that were filmed for the ride as they work to break out of the Collector's fortress. By the end of the two-minute adventure, I was wiping away tears because of how well done the ride was executed.

But what really sold me on the ride was the response from two young girls with their father ahead of me in line. All the way through the queue, they were nervous, asking their dad if the ride would be scary. As they strapped themselves in behind me, they expressed their final worries and concerns for the drop ride. I prepared my eardrums for some very loud screams. However, they never came. Instead, there was jubilant laughter. They were saying how much fun it was. After the ride was over they were asking to go on it again. They were still talking about the ride when they reached the gift shop on the way out, calling it the best ride ever. Multiple times.

That alone convinced me Mission: Breakout has one edge over Tower of Terror: It's a good ride for all ages, especially for kids who may not understand and actually be a bit scared by the concept of the older ride.

Let's be honest. Tower of Terror never felt completely on brand for Disney. The company licenses it from CBS to have in the park. It's filled with creepy imagery of an eyeball and you're moving around in a lot of pitch black before you are tossed up and down through a hotel. In this video, you can hear a child say they're spooked and that they want to leave before they even get to the ride portion.

tower of terror eye

When I think of crying, screaming, and scared children, I don't think of Disney. Mission: Breakout! wasn't scary. It just made you feel like you were part of an awesome party that you didn't want to end.

What to know before riding

Since Mission: Breakout! opened at the end of May, it's currently one of the most popular rides in both of Disneyland's parks along with Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Cars Land, and Indiana Jones Adventure. Each of those can average a steady 75-minute wait by noon.

guardians of galaxy mission breakout wait time

The longest wait I saw for Mission: Breakout! when I headed to Disneyland was two hours. Keep in mind that was on a Tuesday in July. Here are some tips I recommend if you want to get the most out of your experience with the ride I wish I knew ahead of time.

Consider skipping the FastPass if you arrive right when the park opens.

fastpass guardians of the galaxy mission breakout

I secured a FastPast early in the morning to guarantee entry, but if I could have replayed the day again, I would have done Mission: Breakout! without it and stood in line as soon as I entered Disneyland's California Adventure at around 9 a.m.

There's no doubt that FastPass — Disney's virtual queue — is great. It helped me zip through 11 different attractions in one day at Disneyland. But that's just it. I sped through the Collector's fortress and office in less than 10 minutes. While that's great for someone who's trying to get the most out of a day in Disneyland, I was being rushed so quickly through the FastPass queue that I barely had any time to marvel at all of the goodies that were added to the attraction. And that feels like half of the fun.

gotg mission breakout above.JPG

Unlike most rides where you're counting down the moments until you get to the front of the queue, Mission: Breakout! had something to ogle at every turn and Easter eggs waiting to be discovered. I was turning my head in rapid speed to take it all in as I was ushered from one room to the next. I even let people go ahead of me as I tried to snap some pictures of the joint.

gotg mission break disneyland

I also noticed you get slightly different experiences in line if you stand in the general admission "standby" queue or opt for a FastPass throughout the day. The FastPass people get their own separate entry into the ride — and that's on just about any ride.

There are six different versions of the ride

You're probably going to want to ride this more than once.

After getting off the ride, I later learned that my experience was one of six different versions of the ride I could have experienced, adding yet another incentive to go back and try the attraction again. The other ride profiles may play Parliament's "Give up the Funk," Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild," The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," Elvis' "Burning Love," and The Edgar Winters' Group's "Free Ride."

Consider heading there late at night

guardians of the galaxy night

This isn't a foolproof plan, but a lot of parkgoers head to Disneyland and California Adventure's nighttime shows when it starts getting dark. It might be the perfect time to head over to some of the busier attractions — including Mission: Breakout! — for a shorter wait time. I used this trick after seeing Disneyland's revamped Fantasmic to jump right onto Pirates of the Caribbean afterward.

Overall, Mission: Breakout! is a must for any Marvel or "Guardians" fan. Grab the FastPass if you just want to experience the ride, and its many iterations. If you're still itching for the original Tower of Terror you can head down to Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida's Walt Disney World, where the original ride still exists.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Netflix's upcoming mini-series "The Defenders" will bring together Iron Fist/Danny Rand, Luke Cage, Daredevil/Matt Murdock, and Jessica Jones.
  • INSIDER chatted with "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones" stars Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter about their characters finally meeting.
  • Cox said the duo are quite similiar — stubborn people, who aren't into people pleasing.
  • Jones is intrigued by Murdock and says she and Daredevil will "go toe-to-toe."
  • Ritter hints there will be some "cat and mouse" between the two.

When Netflix's superhero team-up "The Defenders" comes to the streaming site in August, it will unite its four Marvel heroes, but the team-up fans may be most excited for is that of Jessica Jones and Daredevil who eventually cross paths on the show.

While the brooding devil of Hell's Kitchen and the private eye may seem like an unlikely duo, the two have more in common than you may realize. INSIDER sat down with "The Defenders" stars Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter in New York City Monday to talk about their characters finally meeting for the first time.

"I was excited about this relationship in particular just because, you know, they're very similar," Cox told INSIDER. "They're quite stubborn people. They're set in their ways to some extent. I don't think Jessica or Matt have really any people pleasing kind of stuff going on. They don't care if other people like them or not."

For Jessica, she sees a blind guy who takes her scarf and wants to wear it over her face to perform crazy ninja moves, as seen in the mini-series' trailers, and she's not having it.

"She's kind of like, 'Who the f--- are you?' Why are you here? What do I need you for? But that's her kind of attitude with everybody," Ritter told INSIDER.

krysten ritter daredevil jessica jones

When the two first meet, Matt Murdock tries to give Jessica some legal advice, but she can't help but feel there's something off about him. When she puts her investigating skills to use, she's surprised by what she finds.

"These characters go toe-to-toe and they feel like they're very much on equal footing." she continued. "Jessica doesn't feel like that with a lot of people. So that's interesting. So she follows him a little bit and there's a lot of cat and mouse there, and there's a lot of earning of trust, which is fun. It was fun to play."

The scenes between the two are some of the series' most enjoyable. You can read our review of the first four episodes here

Hopefully, after the mini-series ends, there's opportunity for the two to work together again on either the next season of "Jessica Jones" or "Daredevil." After all, the two aren't that far away from each other in New York City.

You'll be able to see the two team up later this month when all eight episodes of "The Defenders" come to Netflix August 18.

"Deadpool 2" has added a new mutant to the team — Domino.

The new mutant mercenary will be played by "Atlanta" actress Zazie Beetz, who will join Ryan Reynolds as he reprises his role as Deadpool.

Reynolds first shared a photo of the actress in full costume on his social media accounts. "Some people just know how to work a red carpet," he wrote.

A post shared by Zazie (@zaziebeetz) on Jul 31, 2017 at 7:23pm PDT on

So who exactly is Domino?

Domino, real name Neena Thurman, is a best known as a mutant member of the X-Force. The group is closely associated to the X-Men, but are generally more aggressive.

She was born as a result of Project Armageddon, a government operation that sought to create a living weapon that could destroy the entire world. She was one of the only subjects to survive and escaped with her mother's help. Domino was left with a Chicago priest, who would raise her.

She has been a member of numerous groups, but as of 2016, Domino has joined Deadpool's Mercs for Money team. In the newest incarnation, the team must save Negasonic Teenage Warhead (played by Brianna Hildebrand in the first "Deadpool" movie) from Umbral Dyanimcs, a mysterious organization.

domino mers for money

What are her powers?

Domino has the ability to shape the outcomes of events around her in her favor. Basically, she has the power to make herself lucky. So as long as she makes an effort to do something better than another person or tries to avoid something dangerous, she will be able to generate the luck she needs to accomplish her task.

It's a subconscious ability that manifests when she's stressed. Because it's all subconscious, she tends to move with perfect reflexes and reactions, which also makes her an amazing athlete, fighter, and skilled markswoman. She carries various firearms at all times.

What else to know?

She has worked closely with the mutant, Cable, since first meeting him as part of the mercenary team Six Pack. Domino and Cable have also shared an intimate relationship in the past. Cable will be played by Josh Brolin in "Deadpool 2."

"Deadpool" stars Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, and Stefan Kapičić are all returning to the sequel, which is scheduled for a June 1, 2018 release.

Netflix is slipping after Disney announced it will be ripping its movies from the platform (NFLX, DIS)

stranger things netflix final

Netflix is falling after it was announced that it would be losing a big source of popular content.

In its earnings call after the bell Tuesday, Disney announced it would be pulling its movie content from Netflix's platform in order to begin its own direct-to-consumer service.

Netflix fell after the news and is down 2.96% in early trading on Tuesday.

Netflix has said that desirable content is a big driver to growing its user base, so losing popular Disney content is a blow to the streaming giant. Disney's popular Marvel content is not expected to be part of the new Disney service and is expected to remain on Netflix even after the movies are pulled.

Disney said in its earnings release that the new service should be expected in late-2019.

John Janedis, an analyst at Jefferies, said the move simply reinforces how important Netflix's original content strategy is. Wall Street has assumed Netflix wouldn't be able to renew all of its content deals perpetually so making its own content will continue to be important for the company, Janedis said.

To bolster its original content offerings, Netflix recently made its first ever acquisition in Millarworld. The cult comic book company is known for the storylines behind movies like "Kickass" and "Kingsman."

Netflix is up 35.19% this year and is currently trading at $172.49.

Netflix and Disney are still in 'active discussion' over Marvel and 'Star Wars' films

Netflix is in "active discussions" with Disney about keeping Marvel and "Star Wars" films after 2019 when new Disney and Pixar movies will stop appearing on the streaming service, a senior Netflix executive said on Thursday.

Disney announced on Tuesday that it was pulling new Disney and Pixar films from Netflix starting with its new releases in 2019 and will put the movies on a new Disney-branded online service.

Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger told analysts the company had not yet decided where it would distribute superhero films from Marvel Studios and movies from "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm, which Disney owns, at that time.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told Reuters "we are still in active discussions" with Disney about the possibility of securing a deal to retain the rights to stream Marvel and Lucasfilm releases on Netflix after 2019.

A Disney spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Iger said on Tuesday the Marvel and Lucasfilm movies could go to Netflix or another streaming service after 2019, or Disney might retain the rights for itself.

Sarandos said he expected Disney's service would be "complementary" to Netflix, which carries other family-friendly programming such as animated movies from "Despicable Me" creator Illumination Entertainment and "Shrek" producer Dreamworks Animation.

Disney's plan to stream its content directly to consumers is "a natural evolution" for traditional media companies that Netflix expected, Sarandos said in an interview at an event to celebrate Emmy nominations for Netflix drama "The Crown".

"That's why we got into the originals business five years ago, anticipating it may be not as easy a conversation with studios and networks" to license their content, he added.

Disney and Netflix talk Star Wars and Marvel films rights (DIS, NFLX)

Box Office 2016

Netflix and Disney are in discussions on whether the streaming service will retain Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars films after 2019, Reuters reports. Netflix currently has the first and second installments of the Star Wars trilogy in its catalog and has a multi-year deal with Marvel for certain series including Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

The news comes on the heels of Disney’s major announcement to launch its own Disney streaming service and end its distribution agreement with Netflix for streaming of new Disney releases, both beginning in 2019.

Marvel and Star Wars films are very popular, and keeping them would help Netflix. Marvel films have been successful at the box office for almost a decade, and are the reason other film studios are mimicking their model, according to Collider, while no other entertainment franchise matches the estimated $42 billion total of Star Wars ledger, according to Telegraph. Retaining these films can help Netflix attract and retain subscribers, which is especially important as losing Disney’s catalog in 2019 will likely lead to family subscriber losses.

But keeping Marvel and Star Wars films on Netflix could be beneficial to Disney as well. Disney is considering launching standalone streaming services for Marvel and Star Wars. However, consumers may start to feel inundated with streaming service options, and might opt not to sign up for the possible Marvel and Star Wars streaming services altogether. By keeping this content on Netflix, Disney can still monetize from licensing agreements, rather than investing additional capital into streaming services that users may not sign up for.

Regardless, Netflix’s original content still positions it well to attract subscribers. The streaming giant won’t be left completely vulnerable should it not secure the Marvel and Star Wars rights. Its $6 billion original content budget and planned 1000 hours of planned content for 2017 is sure to provide ample original programming for viewers to watch. Additionally, Netflix has proven it can develop quality content — it received 91 emmy nominations for its programming in July. Moreover, shows like House of Cards and Stranger Things have strong fan bases that drive viewers to seek out and view on Netflix, more so than Marvel and Star Wars content.

Here's how the cast of Marvel's 'The Defenders' looks compared to their comic-book counterparts

jessica jones comics

We've waited several years, but the day has finally come. Netflix's big superhero teamup, "The Defenders," is available on the streaming site Friday, August 18.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage are all meeting for the first time, and, when so many egos abound, it's little surprise that all of them don't get off to the best start with each other. For better or worse, they'll have to put aside their differences to take down The Hand, a group of mystical ninjas who are trying to destroy New York City.

Though you may be familiar with Iron Fist and Daredevil now, many of the hero's looks were completely different when first introduced in the comics. Halloweencostumes.com provided INSIDER with side-by-sides of how the show characters compare to their comic-book counterparts.

Keep reading to see what you need to know about all the big characters you'll see in the miniseries.

Charlie Cox plays Matt Murdock/Daredevil, the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. The character's original suit in the '60s was much brighter in contrast.

At the end of "Daredevil" season two, Murdock gives up the suit to focus on being an everyday lawyer. He'll quickly be brought back into the fray when the group he's been trying to fight off threatens all of New York City.

Daredevil has had a few costume changes throughout the years. A year after the comic first debut, he started wearing a red suit with a double D on the chest. Though Murdock fights against the Hand in the Marvel series, he became their leader at one point in the comics.

Murdock's former love interest, Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung), was introduced in the comics wearing a much more revealing outfit.

The martial arts expert is brought back from the dead to serve the Hand after she trained with Stick in both the Netflix series and the comics.

Her comic look has always focused on showing off her curves in a tight red outfit, even when she has been sketched as an elephant and an ape (really). Only the newer comic series has shown her in a full body suit.

On the miniseries, she's grounded in reality and wears a more realistic outfit for combat. The one thing you won't see on Marvel's mini-series is the red headpiece. Yung wears it as a scarf and cover to mask her face.

Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) is the link who connects all of the Defenders together in the show, but that's not the case in the comics.

Temple is the nurse who has helped out each and every character on one of their shows and she's currently dating Luke Cage, which should be interesting if Jessica Jones finds out. She's actually a combination of two comic characters — Temple and Linda Carter, the Night Nurse.

In the comics, Temple introduces herself as a doctor to Cage and becomes an early love interest of the character. It's Carter who came to the aid of and treated different heroes when injured, including Cage, Iron Fist, and even Elektra.

This Marvel comic could be great source material for the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie

Star Wars ObiWan1

News broke Thursday that Lucasfilm is in the early development stage of a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.

And it got us thinking: What would a movie on the Jedi Knight will look like?

Many fans of “Star Wars” have always been curious what Obi-Wan Kenobi did all that time between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope.” That would presumably be the ideal setting for the standalone movie.

A comic book released by Marvel in 2015 brought some clarity to what Ol' Ben was doing at that time.

Following “Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith,” we found Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor) heading out alone after bringing twins Luke and Leia to safety from their father Anakin Skywalker — who by then had become Darth Vader.

The original film in the sage, “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope,” shows “Ben” Kenobi (played by Alec Guinness) as an elder Jedi living in seclusion on Tatooine until he’s thrust back into the Rebel cause after crossing paths with the adult Luke.

Kenobi dies by the hands of Vader in “A New Hope” and that looks to be where the comic book "Star Wars #7" begins.

In the comic, Skywalker comes across Kenobi’s journals after returning to his home world of Tatooine following the events that occur in "A New Hope." The writings he uncovers are his master’s experience on the planet during “a time when injustice reigned.”

star wars darth vader obi wan kenobi

From the synopsis:

“As villainous scum runs rampant over the blistering sands, only a Jedi Master stands any hope of liberating the planet from the grasp of gangs, thieves and thugs. But would Ben risk everything to do what was right? Even if it meant revealing himself to those searching for his whereabouts?”

Some of the pages Marvel teased of the comic back in 2015 shows Kenobi living an isolated existence on Tatooine.

Star Wars 7 Comic

And here it looks like he's come across a young Luke Skywalker (perhaps keeping tabs on him?).

Star Wars 7 Comics2

Seeing this is canon, it seems like an obvious starting point for the director attached to the Obi-Wan movie, Stephen Daldry. But the bigger piece to this puzzle is the involvement of Ewan McGregor. Currently the actor isn't attached, which shows how early the project is in its life. But signs are good that the actor would want to take on the role. He's said for years (and told us last year) that he wants to play the character again.

Don't expect anything to happen overnight on this project. Lucasfilm has a mountain of stories in different stages of production outside of the continuation of the main "Star Wars" saga, like a long-in-development Boba Fett movie and a standalone on Yoda.

In the meantime, seek out this Obi-Wan comic, and imagine McGregor in these kind of poses from its multi-covers.
